Was born in Lubbock, Texas. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. Newman walked on at Florida Junior College in 1982 and earned a scholarship under legendary manager, Howard Roey.  After compiling a 15-1 record on the mound  with a 1.53 ERA in two seasons the southpaw was awarded First Team JuCo All American honors, Roey’s first.

Newman was offered a full ride to pitch for Jacksonville University his junior and senior seasons where he picked up his BFA in Graphic Design. Had two big wins vs Florida State and Number 10 ranked South Carolina his Junior season. Overall four year college career he compiled a 22-3 record in his first 3  years on the mound before going 4-6 his senior season.
